OSHIMA is said to be the
“Island of the deity”.

Formed around 13 million years ago.
Oshima is an uninhabited island with a circumference of around 2km, predominantly composed of andesite rock, with a notable coastline including Tojinbo.
Designated a National Scenic Natural Monument, it's an integral part of the Echizen Kaga Coastal National Park.

Oominato_jinjya on Oshima

Faith in Oominato_jinjya(shrine) dates back to around 650 AD, where legends tell of a deity protecting the island with a bow and arrow.
Emperor Monmu, aware of this legend, sent an imperial envoy in 701 AD to donate land for the shrine.
Revered as the god of archery, the tradition of dedicating arrows during worship began but is no longer practiced.

Reconstruction of Oominato_jinjya

About 450 years ago, Oominato_jinjya suffered destruction under the influence of Oda Nobunaga.
However, during the Tokugawa era 1621 AD, efforts were made to rebuild it. Today, the main hall and worship hall of Oominato_jinjya are recognized as important cultural properties of Fukui Prefecture.
